Infantino to run for re-election as FIFA president

May 5, 2026

Gianni Infantino confirmed in Vancouver, Canada, that he will seek re-election as FIFA president at the 78th congress next year.

The 56-year-old Italian-Swiss national was first elected in 2016 and re-elected in 2019 and 2023.

According to the French newspaper L’Équipe, football clubs have already given their support to Infantino.

FIFA statutes limit presidents to three four-year terms.

At the 2023 elective congress in Kigali, it was decided that Infantino would begin his second term there, since his first term, starting in 2016 after the fall of Sepp Blatter amid corruption allegations, was considered incomplete and not counting towards the limit.

The African and Asian confederations have already announced their support for Infantino, thus securing 101 out of 211 votes. Infantino had already secured the 10 votes from South America.

Despite having a clear path to re-election, Infantino has faced much criticism. He was recently criticized for his close ties to US President Donald Trump, whom he awarded the FIFA Peace Prize.

The December 2025 award led FairSquare to file a complaint with FIFA’s ethics committee.
