A German investment group backed by footballers Thomas Müller, Mats Hummels and Yann Sommer is set to acquire the Sociedade Anónima Desportiva (SAD) of Portuguese club Estrela da Amadora in a deal valued at €40 million.

According to the Portuguese sports press, the German group, whose identity has not yet been disclosed, will acquire a 90% stake in the SAD of the Lisbon-based club, which currently competes in Portugal’s top flight.

The transaction was completed on Sunday but is not expected to be officially announced until the coming days. Johannes Mosmang is set to become the company’s new president, while Francisco Lopo will remain as CEO.

In addition to Hummels, Müller and Sommer — the latter two of whom are still active players — the group also includes former German player and coach Johannes Mosmang, 35, who will take over as president of the “Tricolor” SAD. Paulo Lopo, the club’s current majority shareholder and president, will step down from its governing bodies.

Lopo bought the club for just €72,000 in 2020 and, six years later, is set to make a multi-million-euro return on his investment.

The historic Portuguese club went bankrupt in the 2010s and was re-founded in 2011. Estrela returned to the top tier of Portuguese football in the 2023-24 season.

The SAD currently has €25 million in debt. Estrela recently submitted a judicial recovery plan seeking a 90% write-off of its debt, amounting to around €20 million. The plan was rejected by the court.

After two rounds of the current league season, Estrela da Amadora have recorded two draws and sit 11th in the Portuguese top flight.
