Benfica recently became the sports club with the most members in the world, having dethroned the German club Bayern Munich by around 10 thousand members.
The Portuguese team is on its way to the unprecedented milestone of 400,000 members, with around eight thousand remaining: in January it had just over 392,000 members.
The 400,000 member mark could be surpassed in the coming months, taking into account the rate of 3,000 members per month that the red-blacks manage to gather in their membership base.
Bayern, which until recently boasted of being the team with the most members, moved up to second place in the ranking with 382,000 members.
Being a member gives you the chance to get a ticket to watch home games at the Allianz Arena, which is always packed, and the German team has taken advantage of this to expand its membership base.
Germans and Argentines dominate Top 5
What is the biggest club in the world? There are many metrics that can help find the biggest football team globally.
The number of members is one of these metrics: it means how popular a given team is in the king of sports.
This top-5, drawn up by the German magazine Kicker, shows the German and… Argentine dominance in this chapter.
River Plate and Boca Juniors are rivals on the court and also in terms of popularity. River had 351 thousand members, placing it in third place in the ranking, and Boca came next with approximately 316 thousand members.
In fifth place on the list is Borussia Dortmund, with the German team registering 220,000 members.
