Real Madrid have been named the best team in the world in 2024, according to the International Federation of Football History and Statistics (IFFHS).
Los Merengues scored 441 points last year, a record for qualifying quickly for the European Cup which they surpassed in June.
In second place was Bayer Leverkusen, who also had an unforgettable year: they were crowned Bundesliga champions for the first time in history.
Xabi Alonso’s team also reached the Europa League final, having been defeated by Italian side Atalanta by their rivals 3-0.
The Bergamo club ranked fourth in the IFFHS rankings, ahead of Botafogo, the highest-ranked team outside Europe.
Botafogo accumulated 339 points, after a dream season in which they surpassed the title of national champion and the coveted Copa América.
Brazil interferes in European domain
The world’s best times ranking is largely dominated by Europe.
The top 20 has 18 times more Europeans and three times more Brazilians than those in this area of the Old Continent.
The list has more than 20 times because in two situations there was a tie, as can be seen in the list below.
In addition to Botafogo, Flamengo appears in the ranking in eighth place and Atlético Mineiro in 13th place.
The IFFHS evaluates football clubs based on several criteria, such as performance in national and international competitions, titles won and results in matches played during the year.
