The World’s Highest-Paid Athletes 2020

Roger Federer topped the list of the world’s highest-paid athletes with $106.3 million in total earnings from salary, winnings and endorsements, according to Forbes.

Swiss tennis legend, who ranked fifth on last year’s list, leapfrogged football superstars Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo and Neymar, along with boxer Canelo Alvarez, to take the lead.

NBA basketball super stars were next in the rankings, including Los Angeles Lakers forward LeBron James ($88.2 million), Golden State Warriors all-star Stephen Curry ($74.4 million), Brooklyn Nets superstar Kevin Durant ($63.9 million).

In the top-10 were also PGA Tour star Tiger Woods ($62.3 million), Minnesota Vikings quarterback Kirk Cousins ($60.5 million) and Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Carson Wentz ($59.1 million).

Top ten in the Forbes’ world’s 100 highest-paid athletes list are as follows:

  4. Neymar (football) $95.5 million
  5. LeBron James (basketball) $88.2 million
  6. Stephen Curry (basketball) $74.4 million
  7. Kevin Durant (basketball): $63.9 million
  8. Tiger Woods (golf) $62.3 million
  9. Kirk Cousins (american football) $60.5 million
  10. Carson Wentz (american football) $59.1 million

There are only two female athletes in the top 100. Tennis star Naomi Osaka, who became the highest-paid female athlete, ranks 29th on the list with earnings of $37.4 million, while Serena Williams ($36 million) ranks 33rd. Osaka and Williams are the only two women featured on this year’s list.

The top 100 featured athletes from 21 nations and 10 sports. More NBA players made the list than those from any other sport at 35, but 31 NFL players made the cut, up from 19 from last year, and they pulled down the most money of any league, aided by finishing the season before the deadly virus outbreak.

Forbes estimated the 100 highest-paid athletes earned $3.6 billion during the past year, a drop of 9% from the previous year thanks to the coronavirus pandemic.
