Jan 6, 2017

It is called the beautiful game. A magic that even money can’t buy. But is it? For the second consecutive year, Finance Football publishes the highest salaries in China. And again the numbers blow someonelse’s mind, proving that the spectacle of football is at the mercy of money.

Yes, the Chinese are literally buying the beautiful game. They are paying so much for this that the Chinese Government is considering a salary cap.

Carlos Tevez is just the last whim. He arrived for days from the club of his heart, Boca Juniors, but for a good reason: 37.5 million euros a year. At the age of 32, the Argentine star arrived at Shanghai Shenhua to be the most paid in the world.

The Brazilian Oscar also arrived this season to Shanghai, coming from Chelsea. He moved out from London for a annual paycheck of 24.4 million euros to Shanghai SIPG. The Brazilian surpassed his compatriot Hulk (and also his team-mate) on the list of highest paid players playing in the Chinese Super League.

Another surprise: Axel Witsel. The Belgian midfielder has just left the Russians Zenit St. Petersburg to represent Tiajin Quanjian. He is 27 years old but the Belgian has chosen to prepare his retirment already. His salary: 16 million euros per year.

In total, the Top 20 Biggest Wages of China 2017 accumulates 245 million euros. It’s an average of 12.25 million per player.
