A group of US investors, including the family offices of KKR co-founders George Roberts and Henry Kravis, has acquired a stake in Spanish football club Valencia CF at an enterprise value of €1.25 billion, making the club the latest football team to attract investment capital.
Pitchwise Holdings, a consortium that also includes Penner Sports Group, the owner of NFL franchise the Denver Broncos, has agreed to acquire a 42% stake in the LaLiga club, alongside a €100 million capital injection.
Valencia has been controlled by Singaporean billionaire Peter Lim for more than a decade. However, the club has been seeking new investors since last year.
The club is preparing to move into the Nou Mestalla, a new stadium with a capacity of 70,000 that could also host matches at the 2030 FIFA World Cup.
The €1.25 billion enterprise value includes debt incurred to finance the stadium’s construction, as well as the €322 million in financing secured last year.
Valencia is the latest Spanish football club to attract private equity investment in recent years. In March, Apollo acquired a majority stake in Atlético Madrid in a deal that valued the club at €2.5 billion. Sixth Street has also struck deals with both Real Madrid and Barcelona.
Valencia enjoyed its golden era in the early 2000s, winning the UEFA Cup in 2004 — the same season in which it claimed its most recent Spanish league title.
“There has been no shortage of interest in Valencia; the Pitchwise team was the only partnership I was keen to pursue. They bring long-term investment expertise and sports acumen, and we have gotten to know each other very well,” said Kiat Lim, Valencia’s chairman and Peter Lim’s son.
“Together we will build a modern club whose men’s and women’s teams compete consistently in Europe, whose academy produces world-class talent, and whose new home at Nou Mestalla becomes a landmark for the city and the entire region of Valencia,” he added.
