Brazilian football clubs and state football federations will meet with members of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s government in Brasília on Tuesday to discuss the impact of the country’s newly announced ban on betting.

According to Brazilian media reports, the meeting will take place at the Planalto Palace and will not be attended by the President himself. Several members of his government are expected to take part, including Finance Minister Dario Durigan, Sports Minister Paulo Henrique Cordeiro, Planning Minister Bruno Moretti and Secretary of Social Communication Sidônio Palmeira.

Among the issues on the agenda will be a potential credit line to support clubs in both Brazil’s Série A and Série B, which could reach as much as R$20 billion.

Betting companies have become major partners for Brazilian football clubs in recent years. The end of betting and online gambling in the country is expected to have an impact of more than R$1 billion on Brazil’s top flight alone.

The plan involves loans from the Brazilian Development Bank (BNDES) at below-market interest rates, allowing clubs to settle overdue debts and invest in infrastructure.

The credit line had already been under discussion before the betting ban was announced, but has become even more important following the publication of the provisional measure last Friday.

The Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) has also been involved in the talks.
