Boehly and Walter prepare to sell Chelsea stakes to Clearlake

Aug 17, 2026

Todd Boehly and Mark Walter are in talks to sell their stakes in Chelsea to Clearlake Capital, which already controls more than 60% of the English club.

The Financial Times reports that a deal could help ease tensions within the investment group that acquired the London club for £2.5 billion in 2022, after Russian oligarch Roman Abramovich was forced to sell following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Since the takeover, the Boehly-Walter faction has clashed with Clearlake over the strategy for the club, which has not won the Premier League since the 2016-17 season.

Although Clearlake owns almost 62% of Chelsea, it shares control and management of the club with Boehly, who serves as chairman.

The two sides are returning to the negotiating table at a time when Walter is seeking to sell other high-profile assets and his business empire is facing regulatory scrutiny.

U.S. prosecutors are investigating Walter’s insurance companies, which helped build his career, following revelations that they provided loans to related parties without disclosing the connections involved.

The insurers are now moving quickly to sell several investments or unwind those loans.

Last week, Walter agreed to sell the Los Angeles Lakers for $12.5 billion to former Disney chief executive Bob Iger and investor Joshua Kushner, less than a year after acquiring the NBA franchise.

Neither side was immediately available for comment.
