A consortium led by British-Indian businessman Amit Bhatia has expressed interest in acquiring a minority stake in Premier League giants Liverpool.
According to the Financial Times, the potential deal could value Liverpool at more than $6 billion (£4.5 billion).
Bhatia, the son-in-law of Indian billionaire Lakshmi Mittal, served as a director and co-owner of Queens Park Rangers for 18 seasons before stepping down from the club’s board and relinquishing his ownership interest on Tuesday.
In a statement, Liverpool owners Fenway Sports Group (FSG) confirmed that a consortium led by Amit Bhatia had expressed interest in making a strategic minority investment in the club.
The BBC reported that negotiations had not been finalised as of Tuesday.
If completed, the transaction is expected to follow a structure similar to FSG’s 2023 deal, when the American ownership group sold a minority stake to investment firm Dynasty.
FSG acquired Liverpool in 2010 for £300 million, when the club was on the brink of financial collapse.
Bhatia is a former investment banker who worked at Morgan Stanley before becoming an entrepreneur with business interests spanning construction, real estate and private equity.
The 46-year-old married Vanisha Mittal Bhatia in 2004 during a lavish six-day ceremony in France that reportedly cost more than $55 million and was recognised by Guinness World Records as the most expensive wedding ever held.
Vanisha’s father, Lakshmi Mittal, is one of the world’s leading steel magnates, with an estimated fortune of more than $30 billion (£22 billion).
