Top 20 clubs who have received most money in fees 2010-2019

Sep 15, 2019

With the summer transfer window closed for most European leagues, it’s time to do the maths and take a look at the ranking of clubs having received the most transfer fees in the last decade — taking into account investments made by big-5 league clubs for the recruitment of new players.

Althought having recruited the best players doesn’t mean you will be successfull on the fields, the more money you invest the best player you have bought, theoretically. And so you are closed to win. No club has spent as much as Manchester City since 2010, and the odds are in favour of Citizens in Champions League 2019-2020, according to Karamba predictions. Eight other teams have invested more than a billion euro over ten years, including Barcelona, Chelsea, PSG, Manchester United, Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid and Liverpool.

While Manchester City is placing as the favorites to win the European cup, bookmakers are also naming Barcelona, Atletico Madrid, Real Madrid, Juventus or Liverpool among the favorites. Do you see any correlation?

This article analises the other side of the balance: Top 20 clubs who have received most money in fees 2010-2019. It’s also importante as the more money you make, the more money you have to invest in improving the team. With more than one billion euro received since January 2010, Monaco have brought in the most money amongst teams in Europe’s top five leagues (Premier League, Serie A, La Liga, Ligue 1 and the Bundesliga) over the last nine years, according to a study by CIES Football Observatory.

Chelsea and Juventus also received a lot of money during this period, with the English club colecting 868 million euro in transfer fees and the Italian champions receiving 787 million euro. They are in the 2nd and 3rd place of the ranking.

3 outsiders

Although teams in Europe’s top five leagues dominate this ranking, it’s important to highlight the presence of three “outsiders”: Benfica and FC Porto (both from Portuguese Liga Nos) and Dutch club Ajax. These revenues are important to fill the gap to the biggest European clubs, as odds in betting sites are against the small clubs in terms of European competitions. More information about the odds of the smaller teams for winning could be found in popular bookmakers’ site, such as Karamba. To find out more click here to get Karamba offers.

Regarding the current Portuguese champions, Benfica is now considered one of the most well-run clubs in Europe in terms of football academy and exports. The sale of João Félix — so far, the 4th most expensive player of all time — boosted Benfica to the 4th place in the ranking, with transfer fees of 780 million euros since 2010.

João Félix is not alone: Bernardo Silva, Renato Sanches, Victor Lindelof, Goncalo Guedes, Nelson Semedo, André Gomes and Ederson have grown in Benfica schools in the last 9 years.

About FC Porto, Benfica’s rival, they can managed to be on the 11st place, after collecting 592 million euro. Oporto team is good at scouting in South America and it was from Dragão Stadium that Europe welcomed players like Falcao, James Rodrigues, Alex Sandro, Danilo, Hulk and Eder Militão.

The Spanish armada

According to CIES Football Observatory, there are 5 clubs from Spanish La Liga in the ranking: Real Madrid (763 million euro), Atletico Madrid (754 million euro), Barcelona (726 million euro), Sevilla (582 million euro) and Valencia (539 million euro).

However, while Benfica, FC Porto and Ajax are tipically sellers clubs, the Spanish armada are used to buy a lot. That means that they had spent the money they received or more than that.

With 4 clubs, Premier League (Chelsea, Liverpool, Tottenham and Manchester City) and Ligue 1 (Monaco, Olympique Lyonnais, Lille and PSG) are also well represented in the list. Surprisingly, one can see only one clube from Bundesliga: Dortmund, with transfer revenues of 678 million euro since 2019.
