United Acquires Land for New 100,000-Seat Stadium and Prepares Farewell to Old Trafford

Manchester United is moving closer to a new era after acquiring the land on which its planned 100,000-seat stadium will be built.

The site, covering more than 10 hectares (the equivalent of around 10 football pitches), is located approximately 350 metres from the historic Old Trafford, famously known as the “Theatre of Dreams”. The Premier League club purchased the land from Indurant, a real estate company owned by Blackstone.

The Red Devils said the venue will become the largest sports arena in the United Kingdom and form the centrepiece of a wider regeneration project that aims to create what the club describes as the world’s most “dynamic and significant” sports and entertainment destination.

New Venue to Cost £2 Billion

United unveiled plans for the new stadium in 2025, estimating the total cost at £2 billion.

As part of the project, the club has committed to supporting businesses that may be affected during the transition period.

Manchester United also said it is working closely with Trafford Council and the Old Trafford Regeneration Development Corporation (OTRMDC) to ensure the stadium’s location aligns with the wider regeneration strategy for the area, while delivering optimal connectivity and the best possible experience for supporters.

The wider 150-hectare regeneration scheme is expected to include 15,000 new homes, including affordable housing, create 48,000 jobs locally and more than 90,000 nationwide, and contribute over £7 billion annually to the UK economy.

A World-Class Stadium

Colette Roche, chief executive of Manchester United’s new stadium project, said: “Being able to build so close to Old Trafford allows us to preserve the heritage, traditions and rituals that are so important to our fans. We are committed to building a world-class stadium with our supporters.”

“This is a generational opportunity that is fully aligned with both local and national growth ambitions. Securing the right land for our new home has been absolutely critical, and the land we’ve acquired gives us the stage to deliver a truly world-class stadium that honours our past and is ready for our future,” Roche added.
