Another European football season has ended, and with the conclusion of the world’s most exciting football leagues, it’s time to do some calculations.
This is the ranking of the leagues with the most fans in stadiums in the 2025-2026 season. And if many think the list is led by the English Premier League, think again.
The German Bundesliga leads in this regard. Matches in the German football championship attracted an average of over 42,000 fans to support their teams in the stadiums. This gives an incredible occupancy rate of around 97.5%, according to a survey by the website Calcio e Finanza.
The German league leads the ranking because of its fervent fans, but also because of its modern venues with large capacity.
The mythical Borussia Dortmund stadium received an average of over 81,000 spectators. Rival Bayern Munich received 75,000 per game in its Allianz Arena.
Premier League with a 97% attendance rate
Second place in the ranking belongs to the Premier League, which is not far from the numbers recorded in German stadiums.
Each game in the English league – which many consider the best in the world – had an average of 41,650 spectators in the stadiums cheering for their favorite teams’ goals, corresponding to an occupancy rate of 96.9%.
In third place is La Liga, followed by Serie A. The Spanish championship recorded an average of almost 31,000 fans per match, and the Italian league just over 30,000. Both championships had stadium occupancy rates of 81.4% and 83.8%, respectively.
France’s Ligue 1 is among the Big-5 leagues with the lowest stadium attendance.
Even so, more than 27,000 fans attended matches per game, giving an attendance rate of 83.8%, the same as Serie A.
Stadiums as money-making machines
These numbers demonstrate the ability of the football industry to attract fans to its venues, which are increasingly becoming a source of revenue for the teams.
But the idea is not that stadiums are only used for 20 days a year (number of rounds), but throughout the year with a series of entertainment activities such as concerts and other shows.
